The right is the corrected finish in sun. Some very fine marks remain, and that is normal: chasing the last few percent means removing more clear coat than is sensible on a daily driver.
Pull into full Queensland sun and you see it — a spiderweb of fine circular scratches across the bonnet and boot. Those are swirl marks, and almost every one of them came from washing. Automatic car washes, a dirty sponge, a bath towel used to dry, a mitt dropped on the driveway and picked back up. Each one drags grit across your clear coat.
Swirls do not just look bad, they steal gloss. Light hits a scratched surface and scatters instead of reflecting cleanly, so a black car reads grey and a red car reads pink. Paint correction cuts a microscopic amount of clear coat away to level that surface back out, and the reflection comes straight back.
Polishing dirty paint just grinds contamination into it, so the prep matters more than the polish. The car gets a foam soak and a safe contact wash first, then a full decontamination — iron and fallout dissolved, clay bar if the paint still feels rough. Only once the surface is genuinely clean does the machine come out.
We then work panel by panel with the dual-action polisher, checking the finish under light as we go. Once the correction is done, the paint is bare and unprotected, so it gets sealed. That is why paint correction pairs naturally with a hydrophobic sealant or a ceramic coating — you have just spent hours making the paint perfect, it deserves protecting.
Here is the honest version, because too many detailers promise a miracle and hand back a car with the same scratch in it. Run your fingernail across the mark. If your nail glides over it, there is a very good chance a machine polish takes it out or dramatically reduces it. If your nail catches in it, that scratch has gone through the clear coat and polishing will soften how it looks but will not erase it.
